The History Of Nike Shoes

On the market of clothing and shoes that is filled with famous brands and outstanding designs, becoming the symbol for quality and style takes a lot of effort. Despite being not as old as some other sports brands, Nike has managed to build an international empire and turn millions of people into devoted Nike fans. Throughout its 50-year history Nike has created dozens of iconic models, often in collaborations with the world’s most recognizable celebrities. Find out how Nike got to where it is now!

1970s

Although the company was founded in 1962, the name and the logo weren’t introduced until 1971. The logo cost only $35, although later the designer who created was awarded with Nike stock and a gold Nike logo ring. In the late 1970s, when the Air technology was designed and patented by Nike, the brand introduced the Tailwind running shoes, which, for the first time in history, featured gas-filled membranes in the soles, aimed at better cushioning for the feet.

1980s

By the early 1980s Nike has made its first major move into the basketball court by introducing the Air Force 1, basketball shoes based on the already famous Air technology. In a couple of years Nike made another key decision by signing Michael Jordan to endorse the new shoes called Air Jordans. The Air Jordans were banned by NBA for a while, which gave the brand, the model and Jordan himself a tremendous amount of publicity, which positively influenced already huge sales of the shoes. 1987 saw the debut of Nike Air Max, another widely successful Air model - this time the cushioning unit could be seen on the side of the sole.

1990s

The 1990s were a decade where Nike didn’t introduce any groundbreaking shoe technology, instead focusing on expanding the business and promoting the brand internationally. During those years numerous flagship Nike stores were launched around the globe. The key events of the decade for Nike include the introduction of a reuse program, the partnership with the Brazilian football team, and getting endorsed by one iconic sports celebrity after another.

Our days

In the last 15 years Nike has put a lot of effort into the design and use of new shoe technologies, including Shox, invented specifically for athletic shoes. At the same time the company has continued its policy of teaming up with famous people, ranging from rapper Nelly to the inimitable basketball LeBron James. Nike has also gained notoriety for its bold business decisions after having bought Converse, another historically significant brand that sadly went bankrupt.
