Today, am sharing with you a BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN short film by Wana Udobang and Imoh Majorboy Umoren.
WanaUdobang is a plus-size journalist, blogger, writer, poet and gender activist living in Nigeria.
She currently works as a radio presenter/producer at 92.3 Inspiration FM in
Lagos.
This fictional short story titled “SHRINK” revealed THE PSYCHOLOGICAL DILEMMA of a FULLER WOMAN. I love that Wana featured herself in the film and expressed real emotions. This is just half of what fuller women feel. If only the society can stop judging us.
So about the story, Wana says, “It all started from a short story I wrote a few years ago called Shrink. A story about a very self-aware young woman who forces herself to come to terms with the conflict raging between herself, her body and society’s perceptions of her body. The idea of “Shrink” didn’t only represent the character physically trying to lose weight but is was also about the character psychologically becoming a “Shrink” onto herself. For some reason I always wished I could do something visually with this story and most of the people I had told said it was a bad idea to film.
Then i watched my dear friend Akwaeke Zara Emezi’s ‘Ududeagu’ and was completely inspired. I took out just three paragraphs of the story, wrote a treatment, spoke with my friend Imoh Majorboy Umoren and after putting it off for a few months because of our busy schedules, we decided to film one early Sunday morning and here we are now”.
I sincerely admire Wana’s creative instinct.
