Hey Ehi, tell us a little bit about your modeling background/career.
Well, I started officially modeling in may 2012. I however participated in various small shows here and there before then. Since I started officially doing this I have done prints for different designers and stylists, walked various fashion shows like DC Fashion Week. I have also worked with a good amount of stores that cater to plus size ladies on their website. I was also recently featured on a segment on NBC4. All in all, my career is going good and I thank God everyday for his blessings.
At what point in time did you know you wanted to become a plus size fashion model
Hmm, I cant really say when in particular I decided I wanted to do this but I can tell you that I haven’t always known. I have always loved posing for pictures but I never knew I could be a model because growing up I only saw skinny models and I have never in one point in my life fit that body size. About 4 years ago I started getting compliments on my pictures and a lot of my friends advised me to try modeling but I sort of brushed it off. It was not until my senior year in college, I started actually believing I could actually do it. So after I graduated in May 2012, I decided to take a year break from school to pursue this and see what happens. Looking back I am very happy with my decision.
How do you prepare for a modeling shoot?
For most shoots I get an email with a checklist of what I need to bring with me. So the first thing I do is go through my checklist to make sure everything is in my model bag; I try and drink a lot of water and eat very healthy the week of the shoot; something I always do is stand in front of a mirror and practice my poses; and Last but not least I try to make sure I have a good night sleep the night before.
Who are some of your favorite plus size models and designers.
Well as for models I love Tyra Banks, Robyn Lawley,Laura Wells,Whitney Thompson, Christina Mendez, Denise Bidot, Jessica likas,. As for Plus size designers, I love Lane Bryant, Ashley Stewart and Posh Nouveau.
Describe the atmosphere when you’re on a shoot. Do you play music? Do you talk with the photographer between shots?
I always love when there is music when I am shooting; it is kind of my muse (crazy right lol). Anyways, I believe the major key to a successful shoot is comfort and for me, music does that mainly because I have always loved to dance. So I guess when the music comes on I feel good and comfortable which allows me to be creative with my poses. Talking to the photographer about day-to-day stuff is a great way to get more comfortable.
What is fun and rewarding about modeling?
The fun aspects of modeling for me are all the different concepts/themes of a shoot. I love playing roles and modeling lets me do that. There are so many rewarding things about modeling. For once, my self-confidence has gotten a major boost (lol). I also love it when people write to me telling me how I inspire them to love their body. That there is the greatest reward I can ask for. Just knowing that you have made someone feel better about something so important, its amazing.
What are some things you dislike/hate about the fashion industry?
I guess the one thing I dislike about the industry is it tends to be cliquey when it comes to picking models. But, I think that happens in most industries. So I guess the best thing to do is stay focused on your goal and stand out.
What advice do you have for other aspiring plus size models?
Do your research before you decide on taking on this industry. It is fun but it is also a lot of hard work. If you do decide this is for you don’t be afraid of rejections, take it as sign to better yourself and skills
